Gigi Hadid Faces Arrest and Fine for Marijuana Possession in Cayman Islands
International supermodel Gigi Hadid found herself in legal trouble after authorities in the Cayman Islands discovered a small quantity of marijuana in her luggage. Hadid, 28, was arrested upon her arrival in the tropical British territory on July 10, but has since been released. Rolling Stone confirmed the news of her arrest and reported that she was fined approximately US$1,000 (nearly C$1,300).
According to local news outlet Cayman Marl Road, customs and border control agents uncovered "ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja" in Hadid's belongings. However, the seized amount was deemed relatively small and intended for personal use. Leah Nicole McCarthy, a friend accompanying Hadid, was also arrested for possessing a small quantity of marijuana and related paraphernalia. Both women were taken to the Prisoner Detention Center but were soon released on bail.
Hadid and McCarthy appeared in court on July 12 to pay the $1,000 fine. Notably, TMZ reported that Hadid will not have a conviction on her record. Hadid's representative informed Rolling Stone that she legally obtained the marijuana in New York using a medical license. They emphasized that Grand Cayman has allowed medical marijuana use since 2017, primarily for pain management and relief from chemotherapy side effects. However, recreational cannabis remains illegal on the island.
Despite the incident, Hadid appeared unfazed on social media. She shared several photos and videos from her trip on Instagram, captioning them with "All's well that ends well." It seems that Hadid, McCarthy, and their friends managed to enjoy their tropical vacation despite the temporary setback.
